மாணிக்கவாசகப் பெருமான் அவதரித்தருளிய புண்ணிய பூமி, கடையேழு வள்ளல்களில் ஒருவரான பாரியின் உற்ற தோழரான கபிலரும் இத்தலத்திலேயே பிறந்துள்ளார் . சம்பந்தர் இத்தலத்தை வைப்பு தலமாக பாடியுளார் .மாணிக்கவாசகருக்கு இவ்விறைவன் திருச்சிலம்பொலியைக் காட்டியருளிய தலம்.வாதவூர் பாண்டி நாட்டுத் தலம்; இத்தலத்தை “தென் புறம்பு நாட்டுத் திருவாதவூர்” என்பார்கள் . சிவபெருமானே குருவாக வந்து மாணிக்கவாசகரிடம் உபதேசம் கேட்டு அடியார் ஆனவர் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
கோயில் அமைப்பு :
ஐந்து நிலைகள் உடைய இராஜகோபுரம் இத்தலத்தின் பிரமாண்டத்தை உணர்த்துகிறது. அதை கடந்து நாம் உள்ளே சென்றால் கருவறையில் திருமறைநாதர் கிழக்கு நோக்கி அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். பிரம்மதேவர் நடத்திய ஆரண கேத வேள்வியில் நீலதிருமேனியாக அம்பிகை இங்கு தோன்றினாள். எனவே அம்பிகையின் பெயர் ஆரணவல்லி என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.
இக்கோயிலில் நூற்றுக்கால் மண்டபம் மாணிக்கவாசகருக்கு சிவபெருமான் சிலம்பொலி காட்டியதன் நினைவாக நாயக்கர் காலத்தில் காட்டியுள்ளார் .இந்த மண்டபத்தின் கொடுங்கைகள் சிற்பநுட்பம் வாய்ந்தவை.
சிவபெருமான் சனி பகவானின் வாத நோயைத் தீர்த்த தலம் என்பதால், இந்தத்தலம் ‘வாதவூர்’ என்று பெயர் பெற்றது.இத்தல ஈசனை வழிபட்டால் கை, கால் முடம், பக்கவாதம் உள்ளிட்ட அனைத்து வகையான வாத நோய்களும் தீரும் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது.
திருவாதவூரில் மாணிக்கவாசகர் அவதரித்தது விசேஷம். சனி பகவான் நோய் நீங்கப் பெற்றது சிறப்பு.
வாகனம் இல்லாத பைரவர் :
அதேபோல் பைரவரும் இங்கு மகத்துவம் வாய்ந்தராகப் போற்றப்படுகிறார். திருக்கயிலையில் பைரவரின் வாகனமான நாய் மறைக்கச் செய்தார் சிவபெருமான். இதனால் பைரவர், ஈசனிடம் தனது நாய் வாகனம் வேண்டினார். ‘திருவாதவூர் சென்று வழிபட தொலைந்த வாகனம் கிடைக்கும்’ என அருளினார். கயிலாய மலையில் இருந்து திருவாதவூர் வந்த பைரவர் இங்கே சிவவழிபாட்டுக்காக, தீர்த்தக் குளம் ஒன்றை உருவாக்கினார். அது பைரவர் தீர்த்தம் என்று இன்றைக்கும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.
அந்தத் தீர்த்தத்தில் நீராடி திருமறை நாதரை நோக்கி கடும் தவம் மேற்கொண்டார். இதனால் மகிழ்ந்த சிவனார், நாய் வாகனத்தை பைரவருக்கு அருளினார் என்கிறது புராணம். எனவே இங்கு உள்ள பைரவர் மிகுந்த மகிழ்ச்சியுடனும் கனிவுடனும் காட்சி தருகிறார்.
சிந்தாமணி விநாயகர், காளீஸ்வரர், விஸ்வநாதர், நடராஜர், வியாக்கிரபாதர், பதஞ்சலி, மாணிக்கவாசகர் மற்றும் சுந்தரருக்கு தனி சன்னிதிகள் உள்ளன.
பிராத்தனை :
திருவாதவூரில் சந்நிதி கொண்டிருக்கும் பைரவரை எட்டு அஷ்டமியில் வழிபட்டு வந்தால், தொலைந்து போன வாகனங்கள், பொருட்கள் திரும்பவும் கிடைக்கும் என்கிறார்கள் பக்தர்கள். இத்தல ஈசனை வழிபட்டால் கை, கால் முடம், பக்கவாதம் உள்ளிட்ட அனைத்து வகையான வாத நோய்களும் தீரும் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது. வாத நோய் உள்ளவர்கள் நல்லெண்ணெய் கொண்டு வந்து இறைவனுக்கு அபிசேகம் செய்கின்றனர். அந்த அபிசேக எண்ணையை வாங்கிக் கொண்டு போய் அதை காலில் தேய்த்து வந்தால் கூடிய விரைவில் வாத நோய் குணமடைகிறது.
இக்கோயிலுக்கு வரும் வழியில் சாலையின்அருகில் மாணிக்கவாசகர் பிறந்த இடம் உள்ளது , தற்போது அங்கு சிறிய கோயிலை கட்டியுள்ளார்கள்.

இக்கோயிலானது மதுரை மாட்டுத்தாவணி பேருந்து நிலையத்தில் இருந்து சுமார் 20 KM தொலைவில் உள்ளது .

English:
The holy land incarnated by Lord Manikkavasaka, one of the seven vallal, Pari’s best friend Kapilar was also born in this place. Sambandar sings this place as a thevara vaippu sthalam. Temple Structure:
The five-tiered Rajagopuram conveys the grandeur of this temple. If we pass through it and go inside, in the sanctum sanctorum, Lord Thirupayanath is facing east. Ambika appeared here as Neelathirumeni in Arana Ketha Velvi conducted by Brahmadeva. Hence the name of Ambigai is called Aranavalli.
In this temple, the hundred-thousandth mandapam was shown by Lord Shiva during the Nayak period in memory of Lord Shiva’s offering to Manikkavasaka.
This place is known as ‘Vadavur’ as it is the place where Lord Shiva cured the rheumatism of Lord Shani. It is said that worshiping this place cures all types of rheumatism including hand, foot lameness and stroke.
It is special that Manikkavasakar appeared in Tiruvadavoor. It is special that Lord Shani got rid of the disease.
Bhairavar without vehicle:
Similarly, Bhairav is also revered here as great. Lord Shiva made the dog, the vehicle of Bhairava, hide in Tirukaiila. Thus Bhairava asked Eason for his dog Vahana. He blessed that ‘go to Thiruvadavoor and worship and get the lost vehicle’. Bhairava who came to Tiruvadhavur from Kailaya Hill built a tirtha pond here for Shiva worship. Even today it is known as Bhairava Theertha.
He bathed in that tirtha and did severe penance towards Thirugara Nath. Purana says that Lord Shiva, who was pleased with this, blessed Bhairava with a dog vehicle. So Bhairava here appears with great joy and compassion.
There are separate shrines for Chintamani Vinayagar, Kaliswarar, Vishwanathar, Nataraja, Vyagrapadar, Patanjali, Manikavasaka and Sundarar.
Prayer:
Devotees say that if Bhairava, who has a shrine in Tiruvadavoor, is worshiped on eight Ashtami days, lost vehicles and goods will be returned. It is said that worshiping this temple cures all types of rheumatism including lameness of hand, foot and stroke. People with rheumatism bring ghee and anoint the Lord. If you buy that abishek oil and rub it on your feet, rheumatism will be cured as soon as possible.
On the way to this temple, near the road is the birth place of Manikavasagar, now a small temple has been built there.
